St. Amand BloodStock website...

Thoroughbred racing, once considered "the sport of Kings"- well beyond the realm of possibility for most people - has been transformed by syndication into "the king of sports," enabling anyone with the dream of Thoroughbred ownership to participate.

My Bio...

First I want to introduced myself to you. My name is   Brett F. St. Amand, son of Ernest St. Amand & Lucille Barkley born 1963 in Wyandotte, Mi.. I moved to Florida when I was 5 with my brothers Sean & Larry. Then at age 10 I lived on a boys ranch. I grew up like any other kid and was exposed to farm animals while growing up there I also played alot of sports in school namely football that was my passion as a kid and during my high school years 1978-1982.

I had the opportunity to play with a great group of guys. During that time I was developing into a young man. While playing football in Palatka we won All but 2 games in 4 years of high school. And my senior year we were 14-0 STATE CHAMPIONS in Palatka, Florid . That is where my desire to WIN came from and has been a part of my life ever since.

I also have a Wonderful daughter name Brittny, who lives in Alabama and is a registered nurse. Anyway back to the sport I love so much...

My first exposure to Thoroughbreds was when I lived on Rodeheavers Boys Ranch in Florida. There at the boys ranch under the direction of Ed MacClellan is where I first came in contact with these beautiful animals. We had about 100 Thoroughbreds and I owned my first when I was 14. It was a 4-H project that involved the purchase of 2 weanlings and caring for them until they went to the Ocala Breeders Sales in the fall. While growing up on the boys ranch we would go to some of the farms and work for extra money. One of the farms we worked at alot was Gross Point Stud Farm, Home of such great horses in the 1970's as Big Bluffer, Distinctive & Shady Character. There we worked for Clayton O'Quinn. He really loved the boys at the ranch. I also had a chance to work one summer at Kinsman Stud Farm. I enjoyed that experience and that carried with me until my next exposure with Thoroughbreds in 1991 that is when I moved from Alaska to Washington after I had served in the US Army from 1984-1988, then the National Guard. After the moved I became involved  with Thoroughbreds after going to the racetrack 1 time and became Hooked. I worked at Long Acres near Seattle.

I worked as a groom for 3 trainers while at Long Acres. They were Frank Lucarelli, Jose Corrales, and Jack Steiner. I owned my first race horse while working for Frank Lucarelli. Her name was Igikai. I paid $400 for 10% in her and my bill was about $110 a month. I had alot of fun with her as she won 1 race while I owned her and I even had silks with my own logo made.

While working for these trainers I learned what is takes to be successful in the Thoroughbred business. I worked for these trainers, because I wanted to learn different training methods and styles. While working for these trainers I developed how I would care and train my own horses one day. The first horse I trained was while working for Ron Glatt in 1992-1993 her name was Poisioniousone, b.f. 92, Aurium - All the Apples. She never made it to the races, due to a illness, but I learned valuable lessons from that experience and from my work with Ron Glatt. During my employment with Ron Glatt, I was in charge of caring for between 10-25 horses at any given time. That meant 7 days a wk of daily care. I did not mind, because my goal was to get my trainers license and start my own stable.

During my work with these trainer's I was able to train & break some of my own bloodstock as well as their clients thoroughbreds. I enjoyed the results I was able to get from the individuals that I worked with. And the way an animal will respond to proper CARE and the BOND that Develops between MAN and GOD's Creatures. It takes a good understanding of how to achieve results with Thoroughbreds.

Well I obtained my trainers license in 1993 after taking the test at Portland Meadows. I passed with flying colors.     From that day on I have had 4 of my own in training and have started one his name was

Linden, Chestnut Horse 95

Sire: Jade Hunter(G1 winner)

Dam: Northern Aspen(G1 winner)

I purchased this horse originally as a stallion prospect for a farm that I was planning while living in Louisiana that was in July 2000. I then wanted to try my luck and improve on his race record so I shipped him to Kentucky, because he was Ky. bred and I felt that he was worth trying up there on those tracks and I also knew that with given the right care and training I could prove that this horse could run. Well Linden was doing real well in training and even had a great workout on the Turf 46 3/5 4F,  so I nominated and ran him in a $75K stake race the Governor's Day Hcp.. Well all was going great until my jockey recv'd a 4 day suspn. 2 days before the race. I was stuck trying to find a replacement only to have a rider with limited experience. Well it showed as my horse had gate trouble and a bad trip only to finish last. Linden ran one more time in an Allowance race and had gate trouble again and it was time to take him home. During this time I had a offer to sell him to a man in Cyprus for a large sum, but the deal fell thru...I later sold Linden to a trainer in Louisiana.....

Over the years I have attended and have purchased Thoroughbreds from sales. I have researched many prospects for friends and Potential clients and have a vast Wealth of Knowledge in and around the racing industry. I have had many great experiences in this business and have met many great people such as Bob Baffert, Bill Mott, John Servis, Mike Pegram, Robert Lewis, D. Wayne Lukas, Neil Drysdale, and Frank Brothers. Jockeys Pat Day, Jerry Bailey , Shane Sellers, Jorge Chavas, Edgar Prado, Jose Santos  Etc.. just to name a few. I have also had the opportunity to attend the Breeder's Cup 1992, the Kentucky Derby 2000 & 2003, Preakness 2003 & Pimlico Special 2003 as well as the Belmont 2004 when SMARTY JONES tried to become a Triple Crown winner, to fall short by 1 length Heart Breaking.

Where "MINESHAFT" won his 1st GRADE 1, now has earnings over $2.3M (retired Oct 2003).  This was a PROSPECT that I spotted after he won his 3rd race @ the FAIR GROUNDS NEW ORLEANS for trainer NEIL HOWARD I offered $1.1 million on behalf of (BUCKRAM OAK FARM) Mr. FUSTOK The deal did not close, but it showed my ability to spot GREAT HORSES EARLY in their Careers also I spotted G3 winner "SAINTLY LOOK"....

for (LEADING Owner Michael Gill) $400,000

Also I have visited many farms in Kentucky namely: Airdrie Stud, Gainsborough Farm, Gainesway, Three Chimneys & Adena Springs Farms....

I also was instrumental in the Continued Development of such stars as  Castabell, Kat Krazy, Nakeen, Northwest Storm, Stormy Ray Stumper, Taj Aire (BROODMARE OF THE YEAR*WA* 2003), Tammy's Secret, That's My Di, Zashrany just to name a few.

I look forward to assisting you in any way in the purchase of QUALITY THOROUGHBREDS...

                      Thank You

Brett F. St. Amand
